This October, to mark National Reuse Month, ShuttleKnit is beginning a new chapter in sustainable design supported by @wicklowcoco Climate Action Team.
Over a number of weeks we'll collaborate with fashion designer Lucy Moller of @refashioned.ie (former Head of Design for Womenswear Clothing at River Island, London). Blending discarded denim with our end-of-line wool and yarns to create a unique one-off collection.
This is part of our new in-house Design + Development Series (DDS) where we invite guest designers to work directly with our ShuttleKnit team. Together, we explore new ideas in circular design, fashioning identities, cultural heritage and sustainable production.
For the Traveller community, reuse and repurpose have always been part of life - long before sustainability became a global movement. This series helps us begin to reclaim that legacy, turning “waste” into beauty and cultural expression.
So why denim? Because the story of textile waste is one we can’t ignore:
👖 Ireland sends approximately 110,000 tonnes of textiles to landfill or incineration every year. (EPA, 2024)
♻️ Less than 1% of clothing globally is recycled into new garments. (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2024)
🏬 And many charity shops are now struggling with oversupply of donated denim, much of which cannot be resold and ultimately goes to waste. (MyWaste.ie, 2024)
If successful, this pilot collection will form the basis of a larger creative sustainability design series in 2026, using other unloved textiles destined for landfill.
This is Traveller-led design - rooted in heritage, resourcefulness, and imagination.
